Ten Crazy Fish – How many have you see?

Think the fantastic fish of Finding Nemo were just fiction? The oceans are filled with creatures that defy imagination.

As a scuba diver, how many can you tick of the list?

Mandarinfish

Native to the tropical Western Pacific, mandarinfish are some of the flashiest fish species around. Their bright stripes and spots serve as a warning for bigger fish to keep away, as these fish secrete a toxic mucus.

Scorpionfish

Scorpionfish, besides being some of the most venomous fish species on earth, are also masters of camouflage. They may be pretty to look at, but don’t touch them — their spines secrete a venomous mucus that causes a stinging sensation.

Leafy Seadragon

Seadragons are one of the most bizarre types of fish, and in this already strange group, the leafy seadragon stands out as one of the strangest. Leaf-shaped appendages covering their bodies help these fish blend in with the surrounding seaweed. Naturally found along the southern coast of Australia.

Longhorn Cowfish

The longhorn cowfish gets its name from the horn-like appendages protruding from its head. When they get hungry, they blow into the sand on the bottom of the ocean to uncover small prey.

Pipefish

Pipefish, related to seahorses and just as weird, have long tube-like snouts with a tiny mouth on the end. You’ll find more than 200 species in tropical coastal waters around the world.

Boxfish

The cube-shaped boxfish is just as cute as it is strange. Most species of these small saltwater fish rarely grow larger than a few inches, making them favorites for private aquarium collections.

Stonefish

Stonefish, a type of scorpionfish and the most venomous fish known, hides on the bottom of the ocean, waiting to ambush its prey. If you want to see one without the risk of stepping on it (ouch!).

Frogfish

Frogfish, another diver favorite, come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors — 45 species in total. They all have some weird attributes in common, including their ability to blend in with the surrounding environment, change their shape and hunt prey using a worm-like wriggling lure attached to their heads.

Wolf Eel

The wolf eel isn’t really an eel at all; it’s a species of wolffish. These typically docile fish have a nasty bite when provoked, and they can grow up to 8 feet long. This shy species prefers to hang out in caves and crevices.

Ocean Sunfish

Sunfish, or Mola Mola, are the world’s heaviest bony fish — and one of the strangest looking. These odd tail-less fish are often the highlight of scuba diving trips in the world’s tropical temperate waters.

Merry Christmas From DiveStyle!

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM DIVESTYLE!

DiveStyle would like to wish everyone a fantastic Christmas. Take care and come and see us soon!

DiveStyle would like to wish everyone a fantastic Christmas. Take care and come and see us soon!

It’s been a great year for our sport. It has been a privilege introducing new people to our beloved sport, getting out of practice divers back into scuba diving and help those that want to stretch themselves that little further.

We are only a small dive centre and retail shop and we would not exist if it was not for you, our customers and students.

Without your support and loyalty we would not enjoy our job as much as we do, and for that I would like to thank you all, wish you a Merry Christmas and sincerely hope that we see you sometime in the New Year.

Before the year is out, take time to browse our online shop even if it is just to give us feedback. We don’t have the budget of some of the huge online scuba retailers but we do have the passion and we feel that shines through in what we have achieved.

We try to not only make our DiveStyle website as user friendly as possible but we hope that the service you receive in the dive centre shows you how passionate we are about our sport and most of all giving you the right advice and guidance when you come to see us.

So please, dive safe, plan the dive then dive the plan so that we can all meet in 2016 for some more fantastic diving.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from us all at DiveStyle!

The Perfect SCUBA Christmas Gifts

Are You Ready For Christmas?

With it being the festive season, we at DiveStyle wanted to give you the best advice with what to buy your scuba diving friends for Christmas! Whether they’re about to take the plunge with their Open Water course or have been diving for years, we’ve built a list of the best presents that you can get for your sub-aqua friend!

For The New Diver:

A new diver will inevitably have a long shopping list, however the basics are always a good starting point. For someone that’s never touched SCUBA but is considering taking their first plunge into the sport, it’s impossible to know where to start. A chant that is passed from generation to generation of diver, the adage that answers the age old question of ‘what do I need?’… Mask, Snorkel, Fins. Mask, Snorkel, Fins. Mask, Snorkel, Fins. Mask, Snorkel, Fins. Mask, Snorkel, Fins!

Masks

oceanic-cyanea-mask

With the Cyanea being the bestselling Oceanic or Hollis mask by a landslide at the NEC Dive Show this year, we would recommend this one straight off the bat. With its tall lenses and variety of colours you’ll be able to see your buddy, and they’ll certainly be able to see you! The silicone is super soft, and will fit comfortably on most people, if you don’t believe us then pop down to the shop to try it on! At £55 it’s a great midrange mask that will see you through years of your diving career without telling Auntie Muriel that you could only afford a card and a twix this year!

For our bespecitcaled friends, we would recommend the Oceanic Ion. With its user changeable lenses we can accommodate most prescriptions without having to send it away, we will do it whilst you wait!

Snorkel

oceanic-snorkels

There isn’t much to say on the subject of the humble snorkel, apart from that it’s synonymous to the sport and always on the starter list of every diver. DiveStyle would recommend the Oceanic UltraDry snorkel, with its splash-guard, auto-sealing bore and non-return valve, it’s everything that you could wish for!

Fins

oceanic-viper-fins

If you want to go anywhere underwater then you best bring your fins! The Oceanic Viper fins accommodate divers of all experiences and needs. A great power to weight ratio (being some of the lighter fins on the market, both open heel and closed) you’ll find UK and holiday divers alike using them. Don’t try and escape people using them, they’re everywhere – but we can keep you unique and stylish with the amazing range of colours!

Bonus Round: Computers

oceanic-computer

Even underwater you can’t get away from computers, but these ones won’t let you play CandyCrush… Keeping the diver safe is its main concern, and it’s amazing how much of a difference it will make to the diver! The new diver may not want to plan the dive and dive the plan, feeling a bit out of their depth. Computers come with dive planning, continuous monitoring during the dive, and a myriad of safety features to make sure the user is always as safe as possible! Whether your friend is new or experienced, if they don’t have a computer then they don’t know what they’re missing! We recommend the Suunto Zoop, and the Oceanic Veo 2.0 as great beginner computers!

The Experienced Diver:

That’s all great, but what if my friend has been diving for a while? Worry not, for this is possibly the even trickier question that we at DiveStyle have become experts at answering!

Torch

hollis-torch

Personally, I dive every dive with a torch somewhere on my kit. You never know when there is going to be a small nook or cranny that you just 100% have to look in! With a small torch with a bit of punch behind it you’ll never be left needing to satiate that curiosity! A must have for internal and external wreck diving, for the night dives, and the gloomy winter UK dives, a torch will always be welcomed! Our recommendation? The Hollis LED Mini3, 210 lumens, AAA battery powered, and at £60 I won’t be lying when I say we know people that have two of them!

http://www.divestyle.co.uk/dive-shop/scuba-diving/lights/hollis-led-mini3-light.html

Undersuit

4th-element-undersuit

For the UK diver, the temperature will always be enemy #1! Drysuit training is almost a pre-requisite of UK diving, even they don’t own a drysuit! The key to it all? The undersuit! Made of special thermal wicking material that draws moisture away from the body, the undersuit keeps the diver sweat free and toasty warm! For the ultimate comfort diving in the UK, we would recommend decking your friend with the Hollis AUG line, for the ultimate warmth and performance without drying your own bank up!

Vouchers!

£50 voucher

If they’ve got everything we’ve listed above, then trust me, they’re still going to be looking for the next piece of gear, whether it’s the divers silverware (stainless steel), a course, rebreather or drysuit, they’ll love the donation to the diving kitty! Sort them out here!

http://www.divestyle.co.uk/dive-shop/gift-vouchers.html

Stocking Fillers

Stocking fillers are always great for divers. Stainless Steel Snapbolts, O-ring grease, Hoods, Gloves, Anti-Fog, books, spare mask and fin straps and sunglasses are great ideas. If you’re looking for a small gift to fill out the stocking then make sure to get some of these to please the diver in your life!
