News – Portland Search & Rescue Helicopter

A coastguard search and rescue helicopter will be retired later despite a campaign and 100,000-signature petition to save the service.

The Portland helicopter has been rescuing people from across the South West with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) since 1995.

The area will now be served by a new £20m-helicopter from a base at Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire.

The MCA said it was 15 minutes flying time from Portland.

The new Leonardo AW189 helicopter started operational duties in April and is fitted with more modern equipment, the agency said.

The Portland area will have back-up from helicopters in Cornwall and South Wales.

It is part of a new restructuring of the MCA which will see a fleet of search and rescue helicopters operate from 10 bases.

The government, which is investing £1.9bn in search and rescue helicopter services, previously said the changes would “modernise” the service and cut costs.

More than 100,000 people signed a petition in 2014 calling for the Portland helicopter to be retained.

It followed a campaign led by Conservative MP for South Dorset Richard Drax.

Last year, the MCA was sent to 526 search and rescues in the South West of England – making it one of the busiest regions in the country, according to figures from the Department for Transport.

Portland was the least busy service in the country with 123 call-outs. However, it only operates 12 hours a day.

Heli Operations saved the Portland helicopter base site at Osprey Quay last year and it will now be used as a refuelling facility.

Arborfield & Other Road Closures

Arborfield Road Closure

Please be reminded that Arborfield Road will be closed from 21:00 hrs on Friday 20th January  to 06:00 hrs on Monday 23rd January for drainage reinstatement and full depth carriageway reconstruction, near to the Magpie and Parrot public house.

Temporary traffic signals will be installed on Arborfield Road from 20:00 hrs on Friday 20th January to mobilise the equipment, allow the required marking out and therefore maximise our activities from 21:00 hrs to midnight.

Access to all residential and business properties will be available for the duration, although this may not be via your normal route.

Shinfield Road / Cutbush Lane Junction

Shortly before Christmas we were able to open the right turn out of Cutbush Lane onto Shinfield Road.  However, at that time we did pre-warn residents that we would require further temporary closures of the right turn before the project is finished.

With this in mind, between 09:00 hrs on Monday 23rd January and 18:00 hrs on Thursday 26th January, we are being permitted to close the right-turn to carry out the permanent surfacing and provide a safe access to remedial works on the neighbouring islands.  During this closure traffic will need to turn left out of Cutbush Lane and then return via the roundabout at Church Lane.

Cutbush Lane junction with ERR

We will be carrying out the final surfacing and road markings at the new Cutbush Lane (East) / SERR junction from 21:00 hrs on Monday 23rd January to 06:00 hrs on Tuesday 24th January.  At this time Cutbush Lane will be fully closed from the point at which the new relief road crosses it towards the M4.

Residents / businesses requiring vehicular access overnight, or before 06:00 hrs on Tuesday morning, should park on the Shinfield side of the new relief road before 21:00 hrs on Monday.  Pedestrians will need to be marshalled through the works and emergency services access will be maintained.

A further night-time closure is required and is currently planned for Tuesday 24th January; however, this has not yet been fully agreed.  We will write to immediately impacted residents and businesses on Monday 23rd January to confirm whether this second closure is going ahead as described.

Shinfield Road

We will soon be carrying out work between Brookers Hill and the old M4 bridge, in the carriageway nearest to the Black Boy public house.  Our work will involve full depth road reconstruction (up to 1 metre deep in places) final surfacing, kerbing re-alignment and white lining.  To allow this work to take place, we are planning to switch traffic over onto the opposite carriageway on Friday 27th January.  This arrangement will remain in place until the end of February.

Due to the nature of our activities and the machinery we need to use, some additional noise is likely to be experienced and, at times, we will unfortunately be working directly outside the properties facing onto Shinfield Road.  Although we will always maintain vehicular access, residents/visitors of those properties may experience a slight delay if we need to move machinery or make the area safe for domestic vehicles.  Access for pedestrians and cyclists visiting Shinfield Road properties will be maintained, however, for safety reasons the general public will be diverted over the new M4 bridge.

Near to the end of February we will need to close this section of Shinfield Road overnight to carry out the final surfacing and white lining.  We will advise immediately impacted residents of the dates nearer the time and advance warning signs will be displayed.

All of the above dates are subject to weather conditions.

One sunny evening after an amazing dive we all agreed that a good G&T would be the perfect way to finish of the day.

We did not want some run of the mill Gin or Tonic for that matter so we asked the waiter what he had to offer, the selection was extremely disappointing!

The next day someone from the weekend text me to tell me about this new exciting online shop that was dedicated to Gin, but not only Gin also Tonics, now this I had to check out!

A quick call and a conversation with Adam and I was so impressed by the knowledge and enthusiasm that i placed a order there and then.

A day later the order arrived and WOW! The Gin Adam had recommended, along with the Tonic match was bloody amazing. My wife who is not a Gin drinker by any means was amazed at how good the combination of the Gin & Tonic was, so much so that he proceeded to polish of the whole glass!

I wrote to Adam and thank him for his superb advice, and wished him well knowing how hard it was to start a business these days. Within the hour I received a lovely replay and the offer of any Divestyle customer who places an oder can have 10% discount, fantastic!

So if you are looking for something different this Christmas and want to give someone an amazing experience on the taste buds then I can’t recommend these guys enough.

Polite, helpful, knowledgeable and literally nothing is to much trouble.

David’s Story – The M2 Attraction

When the sea claims you with her charms there is no escape!

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
Jacques Yves Cousteau

In 2008, I was given a “Discover Scuba Diving” experience voucher, which I redeemed with DiveStyle. Nervous, I turned up on the agreed date, along with a group of similarly wary individuals, all clutching towels and swim wear, wondering what was going to happen. We were greeted by a very relaxed and professional team of guys who offered up cups of tea and biscuits and soon had us talking to each other and generally relaxing into the event.

One of the instructors had a T-Shirt, which caught my attention immediately. Printed onto the black, was a white architects drawing of a submarine and the words “I’ve dived the M2”. Sipping on my tea, I asked the question – “So what’s the M2?”. To my utter amazement, I found out that this experimental submarine was the world’s first and last aircraft carrying submarine, which sank with the loss of all hands in 1932 as a result of a training accident. I was genuinely mesmerised. With a secret interest in submarine warfare and some basic flying experience, I had no idea that the two had ever come together. It had my name on it!

Even before I hit the water that day, the wheels were turning. Needless to say, I loved the try dive experience, and once changed and out of the water, I wanted to know more about the M2. Again, over another fresh cup of tea, I was told that it lay on the sea bed off the South Coast, near Portland, in reasonably deep water (32m). Whilst not a difficult dive, you needed to get there by boat and have your wits about you. To get the most out of the dive, I needed to learn the basics, then progress to deep water skills. I’d need to learn to dive in a dry suit and learn about special mixes in my cylinder which would enable me to spend a sensible amount of time on the wreck. It wasn’t going to be a quick to learn, but it was definitely going to be a journey.

I rang and booked my first course with DiveStyle and then the fun really began; as I need to learn to swim – properly. Not the summer holidays, messing about in the water, kind of swimming, but real water skills that would keep me, and others, safe in the water.

Each course with DiveStyle, I added a new set of skills; navigation, deep, wreck, dry suit, enriched air, boat diving. And each year, I travelled to new places and tried out my skills; dive sites in the UK, dive sights abroad.

And then the bug really hit. The more I did, the more I learned. The more I learned, the more I loved what I knew. I became a rescue diver and learned first aid skills. I learned about optimising my buoyancy and how to help with search & recovery projects. By now, I’d become a long distance swimmer and swam weekly!

Did I dive the M2? Of course, but it took two attempts before we found it. Was it everything I wanted it to be? Sort of. By then, I had dived with turtles, all manner of tropical fish, discovering underwater reefs and diving at night. I’d been diving in Europe, the Caribbean and the India Ocean and seen sharks, dolphins and whales. I’d seen natural and artificial wrecks and met the most amazing array of individuals.

And now I’m a Dive Master at DiveStyle and have the privilege and honour to take people on their first diving experience or help them achieve their own diving goals as well as wok with some of what I consider to be the best instructional team in the industry. I do, however, have a huge soft spot for the M2; since without it, I wouldn’t have the friends, the experiences and the memories that come from this amazing unique sport.

If you are ready to start your journey then get in contact, we would love to add you to our aquanauts!
