Divers are taking a stand, join us, dive and raise money for charity!

Divers Against Dementia

Divers Against is a DiveStyle initiative to use scuba to help raise money for charities that support debilitating illnesses & injuries. You may already know the work we do to raise money for Deptherapy, most recently we raised £1600.00 through a Royal Signals reunion event.

Everyday we hear, see and in most cases interact with people and families that are affected by one of their family or friends experiencing a debilitating illnesses or injury, in some cases both!

My own father fell victim to dementia. Watching someone you love, deteriorate until they are left in a vegetative state is simply soul destroying. The end result of dementia is appalling for the person suffering from it. What people do not realise it can be as traumatic for the surrounding family.

As your loved one recognises you less and less, can no longer function as they did, to the point where they do not recognise you at all is upsetting beyond belief.

I remember standing in front of my father trying to have a conversation, only to be asked by my father who I was. As his condition worsened, he became so disorientated and anxious about this complete stranger that kept coming to visit him, the he refused to get on my car at the end of a day out, by trying to run away, in this case straight into oncoming traffic. It is by the grace of god that he was not injured that day.

I hate, loath and despise this disease. What it did to my father was frightening.

In most cases, vascular dementia itself is not inherited. However, a parent may pass certain genes that increase the risk of developing vascular dementia.

It is time to fight back not only for those suffering, but for the generation that may end up with this filthy disease. The best way we can think of doing this, is to raise as much money as we can through our beloved sport, scuba diving.

In honour of my father we have called the initiative D.A.D (Divers Against Dementia)

What is dementia?

Dementia

Dementia is the broad term used to describe a number of different conditions affecting the brain, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and more.

Dementia will cause a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example.

Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia.

Is there a cure?

The vast majority of causes of dementia cannot be cured, although research is continuing into developing drugs, vaccines and other medical treatments. Here we outline the many things that can be done to enable someone with dementia to live well with the condition.
